Imani Spence lives in Houston, Texas where she is a librarian at the University of Houston. She attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) where she studied English with a focus on Communication and Technology as well as Media and Communication Studies. With this background, she learned media theory while also learning media production techniques. During her time at UMBC, she interned at several companies focusing on marketing and technology while also being active in the community on campus. After college, she was a producer for the Marc Steiner Show which aired out of WEAA in Baltimore. She completed a year and a half of service as an Americorps VISTA member. In 2019, she began at the University of Maryland, College Park where she obtained at Master of Information and Library Science (MLIS). While a Masters student, she was a research and teaching fellow and learned how much she enjoys reference and instruction in the library.
Before relocating to Houston, she was an arts and culture reporter at The Baltimore Banner where she wrote about theater and Baltimore’s growing art scene. In Houston, she hopes to bring her advocacy for the arts and libraries to a bigger stage.
Imani loves to read and has written book reviews/reports for every book she’s read since 2020. She hopes to continue reading and writing about the information crisis we find ourselves in.
